If you haven't been to Maxt Out, it's basically like every other competition except it isn't. Unlike other competitions, junior and major teams aren't split up by different days and venues, you don't have to be invited or selected, and you DON'T GET TECH TIME (ah!). Besides the technical differences, Maxt Out also has "two hearts" or two parties. Aside from the competition itself, there is a whole 'nother party outside the theater, with a DJ, cyphers, vendors, and outdoor performances.
Whether this is your first Maxt Out performance or your 15th (that's a trick question because it's Maxt Out's 14th competition this year, hah!), here are some tips for performance day that you may already know, may have forgotten, or may just be hearing for the first time!
THERE IS NO TECH TIME
So be prepared and bring your portable speaker/boom box/record player/live band/acapella group to practice around the venue.
COME EARLY
So you have enough to time to check in and get your tshirt. And also to find practice spots around the school/parking lot.
THEATER DOORS DO NOT OPEN UNTIL 11
So don't think about getting in there any sooner.
THERE IS A PRE PERFORMANCE PHOTO AND A POST PERFORMANCE PHOTO
So make sure your make up and hair look gr8 and try to #werk and #live on stage but also try not to be drenched in sweat for the post-performance photo. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.
YOU WILL BE INTERVIEWED BY MOOKIE AFTER YOUR PERFORMANCE
So like I said, YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED. Plan accordingly - meaning already know who is going to talk and answer some questions, instead of scrambling around last minute when you're sweaty and out of breath and throwing your hands up in the air and not caring about life.
* DIRECTORS' MEETING *
Maxt Out started this new tradition last year within the directors' meeting where each team brings a gift for another team, and they raffle them off to other directors. From gift cards to a team shirt to a dance survival kit, these gifts are something personal and unique from each team, and they open up the community feel towards all of the other teams. It really sets the tone for the rest of the day, showing the community of Maxt Out as well as supporting its motto: "One Love, All Dance."
SO DON'T BE THAT DIRECTOR WHO FORGETS TO BRING SOMETHING. It's like when you forget to bring something to the potluck but you're hungry so you kind of feel bad eating all of the food because you didn't contribute and you know that someone is judging you. Don't be that person.
